"All choices are on the table. Conversations at different levels are continuous. I have not settled on a last choice yet," says PML-Q pioneer
Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, a prominent politician, is currently exploring the possibility of rejoining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), although he is encountering challenges in gaining attention from the party. Sarwar, who currently holds a position in the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) as its chief organizer, parted ways with the PTI during the no-confidence motion in April of the previous year, leading to the ousting of Imran Khan from the prime minister's office.
During this period, Sarwar declined to follow Khan's directives and considered joining the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), but the idea was rejected by PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif. Sharif cited Sarwar's previous defection to the PTI after the failed 2014 sit-in led by Khan and Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri. Sarwar joined the PML-Q in March of the current year and assumed the role of chief organizer but has been residing in Scotland for several months, showing little interest in party affairs.
Recent developments indicate that Sarwar has been reaching out to PTI leaders from Scotland, expressing his desire to rejoin the party. However, the PTI has not responded positively so far, and it is noted that only Imran Khan has the authority to allow Sarwar's re-entry.
Khan, however, has made it clear that he will not forgive those who betrayed the party during challenging times.
Sarwar's inclination to rejoin the PTI stems from his family members' desire to contest elections on the party's tickets in Faisalabad, as there are no available seats within the PML-N and no viable alternatives. Additionally, Sarwar's son, Anas, who is the Scottish Labour leader, is facing an upcoming election in Glasgow where the Pakistani vote holds significance.
When questioned about his efforts to rejoin the PTI, Sarwar neither confirmed nor denied the reports, stating that discussions are ongoing, and he has not yet made a final decision.
Despite Sarwar's overtures, the PTI has not shown interest, attributing this to the challenging circumstances the party currently faces in Pakistan.
Sarwar's political journey includes joining the PTI in 2015, criticizing the Sharif family, and resigning as Punjab governor. He was later reappointed to the position when the PTI came to power in 2018. Dissatisfaction with the role and differences with Usman Buzdar led to Sarwar's dismissal as Punjab governor during the no-confidence vote, with Omer Sarfraz Cheema taking his place.
